Most of us know the account of Noah and the arc. Some view it as a story, but many of us believe it is a true account of what happened many years ago.
I was listening to this account on CD the other day when I realized that in my mind, I had always thought of the promise God made with the rainbow was primarily to mankind. But it seems clear that the promise is to mankind, and equally to all the animals and creatures that God has made! Yes, men and women are a special creation of God, but this particular promise is not theirs alone. Read what God says in Genesis chapter 9:
9 I am going to make a solemn promise to you and to everyone who will live after you. 10 This includes the birds and the animals that came out of the boat. 11 I promise every living creature that the earth and those living on it will never again be destroyed by a flood.
12-13 The rainbow that I have put in the sky will be my sign to you and to every living creature on earth. It will remind you that I will keep this promise forever.
God is extremely mindful of the creatures that He has made. Although the animals do not share mankind’s privilege of being made in the likeness of God, they are nonetheless very much a part of God’s creation, of which He is proud (the way an artist is proud of HIs work), and for which He has affection and concern.
We have a responsibility to be good to these animals, for they are on the heart of God!
